VenaSeal Treatment

Non-thermal Vein Closure

What is VenaSeal Vein Closure system?

Venaseal is medical glue used to close diseased veins of the leg. VenaSeal Vein closure system is used to treat symptomatic vein disease in the legs, often the cause of painful varicose veins. Unlike other commonly used procedures such as Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation or Endovenous Laser Ablation, VenaSeal vein closure system does not use heat to close the vein.

What can I expect of the VenaSeal procedure?

Before the procedure

You will have an ultrasound imaging exam of the leg that is to be treated. This exam is important for assessing the diseased superficial vein and planning the procedure

During the Procedure

  • You may feel some minor stinging with a needle stick to numb the site where the doctor will access your vein in your leg.

  • Once the area is numb, your doctor will insert a small hollow tube (catheter) into your diseased leg vein.

  • The catheter will be used to deliver small amounts of adhesive (VenaSeal). Ultrasound will be used during the procedure to guide and position the catheter.

  • After sealing the vein, the catheter will be removed and a small adhesive bandage placed over the puncture site.

After the Procedure

You will be taken to the recovery room & follow up instructions will be given to you

1. Adhesive placed in vein via a small catheter

Does the VenaSeal procedure hurt?

Most patients feel little if any pain during the procedure. Unlike the procedures using heat energy such as Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation or Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), after the VenaSeal procedure there is very little bruising as heat energy is not used to close the vein.

When will my symptoms improve after the VenaSeal procedure?

Symptoms are caused by the diseased superficial vein. Thus, symptoms may improve as soon as the diseased vein is closed.

When can I return to normal activity after the VenaSeal procedure?

VenaSeal procedure is designed for quick recovery. Many patients return to normal activity immediately.

How does VenaSeal procedure differ from procedures using heat energy for vein closure?

VenaSeal treatment uses medical adhesive to close the superficial vein. Thermal procedures such as Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation or Endovenous Laser Ablation use heat energy to close the vein. As such thermal procedures are more painful & require multiple needle sticks for injection of local anesthetic (numbing medicine). This can sometimes lead to more bruising after the procedure.
